Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (part of the Gateway National Recreation Area) is one of the best places in New York City to observe migrating species with 332 bird species sighted at the refuge over the last 25 years. That is nearly half the species in the Northeast. It is one of the most significant bird sanctuaries in the northeastern United States. Birding is excellent year round.
Summer Hours Open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Winter and Spring Hours Open Wednesday- Sunday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
The Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge trails and parking lot are open from dawn to dusk year round.
